BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Auburn senior Alyssa Quinones-Mixon won a silver medal in the women’s pole vault Thursday to lead the Tigers during day one of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Fasken Indoor Track on the Texas A&M campus.

A native of San Antonio, Quinones-Mixon cleared 4.40m/14-5.25 on her second attempt for a season-best mark to earn her best finish at an SEC meet. Her silver medal was the best in the event by an Auburn pole vaulter since fellow Texas native Jessie Johnson in 2015 and 2016.

Sophomore Israel Okon, the SEC silver medalist at 60m a year ago, advanced to the finals of the men’s 200m after running 20.71, the eighth fastest qualifying time from prelims. The 200m finals will be contested Saturday at 5:40 p.m. CT.

In the men’s long jump, sophomore Asande Mthembu finished eighth with a leap of 7.75m/25-4.75 on his sixth and final attempt. The South African was in nineth but improved his mark by a half foot to score for the Tigers. Mthembu is Auburn’s first SEC scorer indoors in the long jump since Mark Rubalcaba in 2016.

The quartet of Arianna Roy, Zuriel Reed, Cady McPhail and Hallie Porterfield finished 10th in the women’s distance medley relay in 11.16.21, the second fastest time in AU history, just less than three seconds shy of the school mark set in 1995.

The three-day meet kicked off Thursday with a lighter schedule with the four women’s and three men’s events completed along with prelims in the 200m.

Day two of the SEC indoor championships will start Friday at 11 a.m. CT with the women’s weight throw. Action on the track begin at 4 p.m. with the women’s mile.
