HILTON HEAD, S.C. – No. 5 Auburn women’s golf is in third place in a 17-team field after the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Tigers carded a 10-over-par 294 in the opening round.
“Gusty winds and a tough golf course can lead to high scores,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “As a team, we had too many big numbers, which are hard to overcome on this challenging course. I was proud of the way all five kept their chins up and kept fighting. We met after the round and determined the big numbers came from some indecision, which can be cleaned up tomorrow. Despite a tough day, we left the course in good spirits and excited to play tomorrow.”
As a team, Auburn recorded the second-most birdies in the field with 13 on Monday. The Tigers are 15 strokes behind leader No. 9 Texas, seven strokes behind second-place Florida State and lead the two teams tied for fourth by one stroke.
Junior Anna Davis led the way for Auburn in the first round with a 1-over 72. After beginning her round on the No. 10 tee, Davis recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4. She then bounced back from a double bogey on No. 6 with a birdie on her final hole of the day. Davis is tied for 15th individually.
Freshman Charlotte Cantonis played a steady opening round, recording 16 pars and firing a 2-over 73. She is tied for 19th on the individual leaderboard.
Molly Brown Davidson and Katie Cranston provided the final two counting scores for the Tigers in the first round with rounds of 3-over 74 and 4-over 75, respectively. Davidson is tied for 27th, while Cranston is tied for 38th.
Auburn will begin the second round at 9:20 a.m. CT. Live television coverage will air on Golf Channel from 1:30-4:30 p.m. CT, and live scoring will be available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
