AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore center Emeka Opurum has been named to the SEC Men’s Basketball Community Service Team, the league announced on Thursday.
In his first season at Auburn, Opurum has emersed himself into the Tiger community with multiple service opportunities, which includes volunteering with Habitat for Humanity along with speaking to local sports clubs and to elementary schools in the Auburn area.
Despite suffering a season-ending injury during his first season of Division I basketball, Opurum has stay involved by impacting his teammates and the Auburn community off the court.
“When a young man chooses kindness, service and responsibility, he becomes a role model for everyone around them,” said Director of Player Development Marquis Daniels.
This marks the 28th year for the SEC Community Service Team for men's basketball as well as for women's basketball. All 22 league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's sports being chosen from 1999-2003. The SEC began this concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994.
