AUBURN, Ala.  They arrived on the Plains with lofty credentials and high expectations, then immediately set about fulfilling them, becoming two of Pro Football Focus’ top-rated freshman defenders nationally.

Now, sophomore safeties Eric Winters and Anquon Fegans are back, native Alabamians preparing for an even bigger role in Auburn’s secondary in hopes of restoring the Tigers’ tradition of SEC prominence.

“It’s very important to me,” Fegans said. “I chose to come back for a reason. We didn’t get the job done that we were supposed to do last year, so I wanted to come back this year and put some better stuff on tape.”

“When I was coming up, they won a national championship with Cam Newton,” Winters said. “That’s the reason I came here, to bring this program back to where it was.”

The combination of first-year head coach Alex Golesh and returning defensive coordinator DJ Durkin played a key factor in both safeties’ decision to remain at Auburn.

“That was a real big decision for both of us,” Fegans said. “We’re both from the state of Alabama and we both chose to stay here because we both grew up Auburn fans, we both said why not put it on for the university while we can?”

“Coach Durkin coming back and Coach Golesh,” said Winters, whom Golesh visited soon after his hiring. “My family loved him. Coach Golesh is setting that foundation of what he wants this program to be. That really stood out to me and that’s why I came back.”

Two of three Auburn freshmen to play in all 12 games last season, Fegans and Winters combined for 57 tackles in 2025, forming a bond that extends beyond the football field.

“That friendship has been very good because at the end of the day, it’s bigger than ball,” Fegans said.

Winters, at 6-0, 219 pounds, led Auburn freshmen with 33 tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack.

“That’s what I came here to do,” said Winters, who starred at Enterprise High School. “That was my expectation when I came here so I really wasn’t surprised.”

In high school, the 6-foot, 191-pound Fegans recorded 33 takeaways: 22 interceptions and 12 forced fumbles.

“He’s around the ball at all times, it feels like,” Winters said. “Anywhere you put him, he somehow finds the ball.”

An SEC defensive coordinator the past five seasons at Tennessee, Auburn safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Tim Banks oversees Winters and Fegans’ growth.

“Coach Banks has a big impact on us because he’s very fine in the details,” said Fegans, a 7A state champion and team captain at Thompson High School. “He critiques everything we do because he was a DC.”

It’s a big jump from high school football to the SEC. After making a smooth transition last season, Fegans and Winters seek to take the next step in spring practice.

“Slowly but surely getting better each and every day,” Fegans said. “From last year to this year, I feel like I took a big step in me being in the right position at the right time. My confidence is growing a lot because I know what I’m doing. I know how to get guys around me lined up now.”

From his new head coach, Winters sees intensity and a commitment to connection.

“He elevates guys,” Winters said of Golesh. “Guys truly love being around him, love playing for him and they want to go to war for him.”

The sophomore standouts look to showcase their continuing development during Auburn’s A-Day game April 18 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“Showing the Auburn family what to expect this upcoming season,” Winters said.
