AUBURN, Ala. – No. 18 Auburn men’s tennis will compete in the SEC men’s tennis championship this week, hosted by Texas A&M, at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Tigers will begin their run at the title Thursday at 6 p.m. against No. 19 Florida.
“We played Florida earlier in the year at home, but it’s going to be totally different as far as our matchups in singles and doubles as well as being outside,” Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said. “It’s going to be a totally different match with the different emotions.
“These courts at Texas A&M are a little quicker. We can get some high heat and humidity here, so that changes things, too. I think anytime that you can spend a few days at a facility prior to your match is going to give you the best chance to succeed.”
Auburn enters the postseason with a 16-9 overall record and a 6-8 record in conference play. The Tigers are the 8-seed in the event and will begin in the second round. With a win Thursday, Auburn will play No. 1 Texas in the quarterfinals Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Saturday’s semifinals will be played at 4 p.m. CT and Sunday’s championship will take place at noon CT.
The team split its final weekend of the regular season on the road, defeating No. 25 Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi, 4-3 on Friday before dropping the regular-season finale to No. 13 Georgia on Sunday.
Florida will enter the championship with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-8 SEC record. In the regular-season meeting, the Tigers claimed a 6-1 victory over the Gators in their SEC opener at home on Feb. 21.
Last season in Columbia, South Carolina, Auburn pulled off a dramatic 4-3 victory over Kentucky in its first match of the SEC championship, featuring a match-clinching singles win from Joey Phillips in three sets. The Tigers then fell in the quarterfinals to Texas 4-1 to finish their run in the quarterfinals. Auburn has not won an SEC championship tournament title since the event began in 1990.
