Tiger Trail of Auburn inducts Class of 2026

An Auburn tradition since 1995, the Tiger Trail of Auburn inducted four members in the Class of 2026: Danielle Downey (women's golf), Tyler McGill (swimming and diving), Benji Roland (football) and Ralph Spry (track and field).

AUBURN, Ala.  Unaccustomed to hearing their father relive his Auburn football glory days, Benji Roland’s children were surprised to discover their dad’s name listed among Tiger legends at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“At one time, I didn’t think my kids knew I played at Auburn,” Roland recalled Saturday in the Rane Room of the Auburn Athletics Complex. “They came home one day and said, ‘Daddy, your name’s on the wall at the stadium.’ I said, yeah, I was an All-American. They didn’t think I played football.”

Roland didn’t merely play football. He dominated, anchoring Auburn’s defensive line from 1985-88 and winning back-to-back SEC championships his junior and senior seasons.

Four decades later, Roland was inducted into the Tiger Trail of Auburn, a partnership between Auburn Athletics, the City of Auburn and Auburn Chamber of Commerce that recognizes honorees with plaques on downtown sidewalks.

“What we did for Auburn is we loved Auburn,” Roland said. “We loved that AU on our hat. I could never, ever repay Auburn University what they gave me.”

One of four new Tiger Trail Class inductees, Roland joined former swimmer Tyler McGill, former women’s golfer Danielle Downey and former track and field head coach Ralph Spry in the Class of 2026.

“Once you get to Auburn, you realize there’s something even more special that keeps you here,” said McGill, a 15-time All-American, two-time national champion and Olympic gold medalist who swam for the Tigers from 2006-10. “Ultimately, that’s the people you meet while you’re here. Auburn will always give people exactly what they need at exactly the right time for exactly the right reason. I think everyone in this room has experienced that to some degree.”

A native of Rochester, New York, Downey was a three-time All-American and four-time All-SEC honoree. The medalist at the 2000 SEC Championship, Downey led the Tigers to SEC titles her freshman and senior seasons before she passed away in 2014 in a car accident.

“Danielle knew how to win,” said 2018 Tiger Trail inductee Kim Evans, who coached Downey and later hired her to be the Tigers’ director of golf operations. “She was a fierce competitor with a gigantic heart who loved Auburn.”

The fourth track and field coach in Auburn history, Spry joins his three predecessors – Wilbur Hutsell, Mel Rosen and Harvey Glance – as Tiger Trail inductees.

“I wouldn’t change a thing because it was those moments, good and bad, that made me who I am today,” said Spry, who coached the Tigers from 1998-2022 and who led Auburn’s women’s team to the 2006 NCAA outdoor championship. “Auburn is a wonderful place. When you talk about the Auburn family, that’s real, and I’ve seen it firsthand.”

Created in 1995, the Tiger Trail now includes 144 inductees, former student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have left an indelible mark on the Plains, figuratively and literally.
