AUBURN, Ala. – Powered by an 11-run fourth inning, Auburn softball wrapped up its slate at Jane B. Moore Field with a 13-3 victory in five innings Sunday, spoiling Ole Miss’ chance to sweep the series on Senior Day.

“Ultimately, we knew that Ole Miss was going to try to make us force ourselves out,” said co-head coach Kate Malveaux. “We knew they were going to come over the plate at some point. It was about controlled aggression. When we got our pitch, we got the swing off. We weren’t overly out of ourselves trying to make it happen.”

Trailing by one run in the fourth, Auburn’s offense exploded for 11 runs behind four hits and seven walks to come from behind and end the game early. Junior Alyssa Hastings went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the fourth inning alone. She scored twice and drove in four runs.

“Hastings shows the way for a lot of our team and frees them up to do it,” Malveaux said. “She knows who she is and how to go attack what she’s got. It’s really great to see her take charge of it, especially this late in the season, to build some momentum that we need down the stretch.”

After loading the bases in the first frame, Auburn (25-24, 4-17 SEC) pushed across the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly from sophomore AnnaLea Adams. An errant throw from the outfield bounced into the Ole Miss dugout and out of play, giving the Tigers an additional run.

All three of the Rebels’ runs came in the second inning as Ole Miss used five singles to manufacture its offense.

Senior Destiny Rodriguez led off the fourth with a walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Redshirt sophomore Kyla Stroud tied the game with a pinch-hit single to first base. Hastings then put the Tigers in front with a double to center field.

After a walk loaded the bases, freshman Haven Roebuck singled through the left side to extend the lead. Adams followed with a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 6-3.

Ole Miss (30-22, 4-17 SEC) recorded the second out at home plate on a fielder’s choice. On the next play, the Rebels attempted a force out at second, but junior Ma’Nia Womack slid in safely to keep the inning alive and allow another run to score.

Auburn then drew three straight bases-loaded walks to build a 10-3 advantage. Hastings capped the inning by clearing the bases with a second double to center field.

Redshirt freshman Abby Herndon (5-4) earned the victory in relief for the Tigers. She retired six of the seven batters she faced, allowing just one single in the fifth inning while striking out two.

“We’re a group that you just can’t count out,” Malveaux added. “We showed that today. They’re fighting like crazy. We are picking up momentum at the right time, so we’re going to carry that down into Baton Rouge. We’re excited for a Thursday game on the road.”
