AUBURN, Ala. – After a whirlwind first week on the job, Auburn formally introduced gymnastics head coach Ryan Roberts Tuesday at Neville Arena.

“It’s a big honor but I have a high sense of duty and responsibility to get this right,” Roberts said. “The student-athletes deserve it. They’re ready to go. There’s so much excitement about this program. I’m ready to get to work.”

Roberts brings eight years of SEC experience to the Plains, including the past two as co-head coach at Georgia.

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” Roberts said. “This is the right place to build something and I love challenge. Auburn Athletics stands for excellence, pride and competing at the highest level in the SEC.”

In the week since his hiring, Roberts recruited prospective future Auburn gymnasts and met individually with the Tigers’ current team members.

“They’re hungry to go and I think they’re ready to roll,” said Roberts, whose resume includes top-5 signing classes and a No. 1 class. “We’re going to have success sooner than later.”

Roberts outlined his plan for student-athlete development, preparing his gymnasts for success in competition, academics and their post-gymnastics careers.

“My metric of success is, in 10 years are they going to say, ‘I’m a better person for being an Auburn gymnast,’” he said. “We’re going to train with purpose, we’re going to compete with edge and we’re going to represent Auburn the right way.”

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Roberts shared his leadership style.

“True leaders give credit for the successes, and they take blame for the failures,” he said.

Roberts hopes to take Auburn’s renowned Friday Night Heights meet experience even higher.

“Excitement,” he said. “I want them to see that the girls are having fun and working hard. I want them to see that the effort and the teamwork culminate in maximizing our performance.”

Roberts concluded his opening remarks by speaking directly to those who are invested in Auburn’s gymnastics program.

“To our alumni and fans, Auburn Family, the 10.0 Club, the Jungle and the Gymnasties, you matter,” he said. “Your energy, support and belief in this program make a difference. We’re going to give you a team you can be proud of. I can’t wait to be part of this experience at Neville Arena.

“I’ve been there as a visiting team. Now it’s time to make it home, and a great experience for everybody.

“I’m excited to get to work to build relationships and chase championships the right way. We’re not here to blend in. We’re here to elevate Auburn gymnastics. War Eagle!”
