AUBURN, Ala.Auburn track and field freshman Sophia Mazzoni was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

A native of Derry, Pennsylvania, Mazzoni broke her own Auburn freshman javelin record twice at the Tiger Track Classic on Saturday. She first set a mark of 52.21m/171-03 before surpassing it on her final attempt with a throw of 54.50m/178-05.

Her winning mark ranks No. 16 nationally this season and is No. 3 among freshmen in the nation, while standing as the top freshman mark in the SEC.

This marks the fourth time this season Mazzoni has broken or tied the freshman javelin record in just four collegiate competitions. Mazzoni is now the No. 4 performer in Auburn history in the event.

Mazzoni is the first Auburn freshman female to win SEC Freshman of the Week honors since Daina Levy in 2013.

The Tigers will be back in action this weekend at the Torrin Lawrence Invitational on Spec Towns Track in Athens, Georgia, May 1-2.
