AUBURN, Ala. – Center Bukky Oboye (BOO-key Oh-BOY-eh) is a fresh face on the Auburn men’s basketball roster that will provide instant size, speed and agility standing at 7-foot-1.
Obeye made his way to the Plains after three years at Santa Clara, highlighted by last season where he started 34 games for a Broncos team that finished 26-9 and earned an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament.
Oboye didn’t hit his growth spurt until he was sophomore in high school, providing Auburn with a unique and versatile center that can handle the ball.
Q&A With Bukky Oboye:
Q: How have your first few weeks on the Plains been?
A: It’s been really good. I like it a lot. It’s a college town and everything is close by. It’s different than Santa Clara but I really like it.
Q: Describe your new teammates and how they have helped you transition to Auburn.
A: They have been helping me out with everything and pushing me a lot. I love the culture and everyone has been very welcoming.
Q: What led you to choosing Auburn?
A: The coaches. They trust me and put a lot of faith in me. That was the main reason why I wanted to play here.
Q: Take us through your progression at Santa Clara and where you think you grew the most as a player.
A: As a person I want to thank my coaches and my teammates because they helped me grow for the three years I was there. With basketball, I feel like I added more to my game each year. Specifically my shot and ball handling.
Q: What can fans expect to see from you on the court this season? Describe yourself as a player.
A: It will be really exciting to watch. I will be dunking a lot and can put the ball on the ground a bit. I will also be blocking a lot of shots, so it will be exciting for the fans to watch.
Q: When did you hit your growth spurt going from 6-foot-4 to 7-foot-1 and what was that like for you?
A: It was my sophomore year of high school. But even before that my brother put the ball in my hands and told me to work on my ball-handling skills. The summer of my sophomore year I grew a lot – like to 6-foot-10, then from there it was smooth sailing and I was a center.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in your first season at Auburn?
A: The fans. The culture. Everything. I am ready. War Eagle!
