AUBURN, Ala. – Playing with 10 players for the final 57 minutes of the contest, the Auburn women’s soccer team tied with Georgia State 1-1 on Sunday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
“We talk about this team and the motto is ‘stick together,’ head coach James Armstrong said. “I think they did an unbelievable job of that. We had some incredible performances. We didn’t go as deep into the bench but it’s tough to play with 10 players. I thought we organized ourselves well and created lot of chances even when it was 11 vs. 10, so I am proud of the effort tonight.”
The Tigers (3-0-2) struck first on Dylan Driver’s third goal of the season in the 14th minute. Driver, who was standing in front of GSU’s goalie inside the 6-yard box, flicked the ball with her left foot past the keeper on a cross from Jordyn Crosby for an early 1-0.
GSU’s premier goal scorer Aaliyah Faddoul evened the game in the 22nd minute for her seventh goal of the season which tied the game at 1-1.
In the 37th minute, Auburn’s Grace Ivey was issued a straight red card for her tackle in the middle of the pitch, and the Tigers would play with 10 for the remainder of the game.
Despite being down a player, the Tigers controlled most of the play in the second half, and with 15 minutes to go, GSU’s Lily Sawyer was issued her second yellow card as the two teams would play 10 vs. 10 down the stretch.
Auburn out-shot Georgia State 11-4 and held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. GSU keeper Alondra Iriarte tallied three saves on the night, including a spectacular diving save in the first half which ultimately helped the Panthers (2-2-1) earn the draw.
Auburn is back in action on Thursday night with a road trip to Birmingham to face UAB at PNC Field. Kick is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
