AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn freshman Faith Chelangat was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Runner of the Week Tuesday for her silver-medal performance at the Southern Showcase last Friday. It marks the second time this season that Chelangat has received weekly honors from the conference office.
Chelangat continued her strong start to the season, finishing the women’s 5k at the Southern Showcase with a time of 15:50.2 at the John Hunt Cross Country Running Park in Huntsville.
In her collegiate debut on Sept. 4, the Sotik, Kenya, native won an individual title at Auburn’s season-opening team victory at the JSU Foothills Invitational. Chelangat was named the conference’s Women’s Runner of the Week following her victory in the season opener.
Chelangat is the first Auburn woman since Angela Homan in 2004 to win multiple SEC cross country weekly awards. She is just the seventh SEC women’s athlete in the last 20 years to be named SEC Runner of the Week and SEC Freshman Runner of the Week in the same year.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Crimson Classic at the Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa.
