COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Auburn soccer team pitched its second straight SEC shutout, rolling to a 2-0 victory over Missouri on Thursday evening at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
The Tigers' defense continued its dominant stretch, recording its eighth shutout in 10 matches after limiting Missouri to one corner kick and two shots on goal. Auburn's back line has allowed just two goals this season, leading the SEC and ranking tied for third nationally.
“Winning in the SEC is hard and to do it on the road is even harder,” head coach James Armstrong said. “We fought hard tonight and created some good chances. The two we scored were at a good time in the game. I thought the defense made some big plays, particularly in the second half. We will enjoy tonight and get back to work tomorrow.”
Auburn wasted no time getting on the board in the 17th minute with junior Kelly Gordon dribbling across the end line before playing the ball off to a wide-open Kennedy Husbands, who was lurking at the top of the six for her second goal of the season and second straight match with a goal.
The visiting Tigers struck again just three minutes later off a corner kick. Gordon took advantage of chaos in the box, once again assisting a teammate, finding fifth-year Tahirah Turnage-Morales open at the near post for an easy tap into the back of the net to double Auburn's advantage.
Auburn has taken advantage of set pieces over the last two conference matches, scoring twice off corners against Ole Miss and adding another corner-kick goal against Missouri. Auburn entered Thursday's match as one of just 10 teams to generate 75 or more corner kicks this season.
Auburn outshot Mizzou, 21-7, marking the most shots the Missouri defense has allowed this season and the first time Missouri has allowed 20 or more shots since Auburn put up 22 in the regular-season finale last year.
Goalkeeper Ayana Yapo recorded a pair of saves, giving the junior goalkeeper 45 career saves.
