AUBURN, Ala. — Looking to maintain momentum, Auburn soccer visits No. 20 Oklahoma on Friday at 7 p.m. CT in recognition of the Sooner’s Kicks for a Cure Game.
“We are going to have to be on point defensively, win the first and second ball and then handle their pressure when we have possession to stretch them out a little bit,” head coach James Armstrong said. “They have a very potent offense and very organized defense.”
Auburn got back in the win column after a 1-0 victory against then-ranked No. 13 Tennessee last Thursday at home, marking head coach James Armstrong’s first ranked win as an Auburn Tiger. Forward Dylan Driver scored the only goal in the match, off a lobbed assist by junior Gracie Brown in the 25th minute.
Recently recognized as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, Brown has helped anchor an Auburn defense that has allowed just three goals through 12 matches, leading the SEC and ranking tied for second nationally. The three goals allowed are also the fewest in program history through 12 matches.
Additionally, junior goalkeeper Ayana Yapo recorded her 50th career save after a shot on goal by Shae O’Rourke in the 78th minute during the shutout victory.
Oklahoma suffered its second consecutive defeat of the season on Sunday, falling 2-1 to No. 25 Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Kate McCallister struck first with a goal for the Sooners in the 29th minute. Despite securing an early lead, the Longhorn’s responded with two goals by Amalia Villarreal in the 68th and 82nd minute.
Auburn and Oklahoma met for the first time in program history last year which resulted in a 1-1 deadlock at home. Kayla Keefer tallied the first goal for the Sooners in the 59th minute with an assist by Alexis Washington but Erin Flurey responded with a goal in the 63rd minute for the Tigers.
