AUBURN, Ala. – On a hill overlooking the program’s picturesque 30-acre practice range, Auburn Athletics dedicated the Kim Evans Student-Athlete Lounge Thursday in honor of the hall of fame coach whose vision helped make the Jack Key Golf Teaching Facility possible.

“I remember Coach Evans walking in the office and she’d have napkins, she’d be drawing the facility,” recalled Nick Clinard, Auburn’s men’s golf coach since 1999. “Where you’re sitting is her vision. The student-athletes we have today would not have this without Coach Evans so we’re incredibly grateful for that.”

“I’m humbled and I’m grateful to be an Auburn Tiger,” Evans said, thanking by name the donors, administrators, staff, coaches and student-athletes who have supported Auburn’s golf programs. “This honor was never in my wheelhouse, so I’m very taken and very moved.”

When Evans arrived at Auburn as a freshman nearly 50 years ago from Decatur, Alabama, there were two golf courses in town.

“When I came to college, we worked out of our car,” said Evans, an Auburn golfer from 1977-81 who returned to coach the women’s team in 1994. “It was always our dream to have our own facility and we got it. A lot of people chipped in and made this golf house – we call it our home – come to life.”

From 1994-2015, Evans led the Tigers to eight SEC championships and coached seven SEC players of the year, leading the Tigers to seven top 10 national finishes in 14 NCAA Championship appearances.

The national coach of the year in 2002, Evan was inducted into the National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2026.

“Auburn golf has a tradition of being fighters, winning, giving it their all, all the time,” said Evans, a five-time SEC coach of the year, 2016 SEC Women’s Legend and the first woman to win Auburn’s Walter Gilbert Award in 2015. “I’d like to think those early teams I was able to coach and bring home some championships helped formulate some great things to come.”

Athletics director John Cohen formally dedicated the space during Thursday’s ceremony.

“It is altogether fitting and proper that the student-athlete lounge here at the Jack Key Golf Teaching Facility will henceforth forever be known as the “Kim Evans Student-Athlete Lounge,” Cohen said. “Kim, since the day you became Auburn’s head women’s golf coach in 1994, no one has been more committed than you to making sure Auburn student-athletes have an exceptional experience in every facet of their lives.

“Every time they come into this space to relax after sharpening their skills, it’s your name they’ll see. And it’s your example of excellence, commitment to serving others, and love for Auburn – that we should all seek to follow.”

Overwhelmed by the recognition, Evans received it with humility and gratitude.

“The neat thing about Auburn is it just keeps getting better,” she said. “Just when you think it can’t get any better, Auburn always surprises as it gets better, and I love being a part of anything Auburn.”
