Drago Ćeranić, a world-class defensive specialist, joined the Auburn soccer program as an associate head coach on Dec. 10, 2024, the first staffing addition under the leadership of head coach James Armstrong.

“We’re thrilled to announce the addition of coach Ćeranić to the coaching staff,” Armstrong said. “He brings an impressive track record of defensive success and a deep commitment to player development, both of which will help us in our quest to pursue championships.”

“I am honored to join the program at Auburn University and excited to be an integral part of the vision put in place by coach Armstrong,” Ćeranić said. “Auburn’s reputation speaks for itself. I am eager to help build on the strong foundation of success while fostering growth and excitement within the program.

“From the warm welcome of the community to the energy and passion of the players, it is clear this is a special place. My wife, Andrea, our son, Alek, and I are thrilled to become a part of the Auburn family. Let’s get to work!”

In his first season with the Tigers, Ćeranić’s next-level defensive IQ shone through as Auburn ranked second in the Southeastern Conference with just seven opposing shots allowed per match. His defense held Auburn's opposition to a single goal or less on all but four occasions, which was crucial to the Tigers earning points off of three top-20 opponents in conference play.

Two vital members of the 2025 Auburn defensive core were rewarded with All-SEC honors. Holding midfielder Hayden Colson earned First Team. Center back Lily Devereaux was named to the All-Freshman Team.

Ćeranić joined the Auburn program after spending the previous season as an assistant coach at Mississippi State University. While in Starkville, Ćeranić worked closely with the Bulldogs’ defense that quickly proved itself as the best in the nation.

Thanks to Ćeranić’s elite defensive vision, Mississippi State earned a clean sheet in 73% of its matches over the course of the 2024 season, including 12 of 13 matches at home. They went on to lead Division I and smash the program record with 16 total shutouts. The Bulldogs also ranked second in the nation with a 0.45 goals-against average.

Ćeranić’s backline led the Southeastern Conference in every defensive category and conceded just two goals over all 900 minutes of league play. As a reward for the dominant defensive effort all year long, Mississippi State earned the SEC Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year and Midfielder of the Year.

Prior to coaching alongside Armstrong in Starkville, Ćeranić spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as an assistant at Mercer University. During his time at Mercer, Ćeranić guided the Bears to 19 wins and an appearance in the SoCon Tournament semifinal.

Under his tutelage, Mercer remained undefeated at home in 2022, boasting seven wins and three draws with a remarkable 34-7 goal differential. Before his stint at Mercer, Ćeranić served as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, where he played a pivotal role in the team's achievements, notably contributing to the 2020 Big Ten Championship title.

As a player, Ćeranić played collegiately at Mount Mercy (Iowa) University, where he was a four-time All-Midwest Collegiate Conference selection. He was the Mustangs' Newcomer of the Year in 2006, was team MVP in 2007 and 2008, and was a three-year team captain. Ćeranić was also a three-time all-academic selection and was named to the NAIA Champion of Character Team in 2009.

A native of Serbia, Ćeranić graduated from Mount Mercy University in 2010 with a degree in multimedia design and communications. He is married to Andrea Ćeranić. The couple has one son, Alek.
