Liz Underwood brings 25 years of volleyball coaching experience, 12 of it at the Division I level, into her second season as an assistant coach on Laura Farina[apos]s staff. Among many responsibilities Underwood assumes, she also assists in recruiting and developing of athletes in the Auburn program while working specifically with the blockers and hitters on the team.

Underwood, formerly Liz Bitzer, was the head coach at Auburn from 1992 until 1997 and compiled a 99-81 record for a .550 winning percentage. During her time on the Plains the Tigers won their only SEC West Championship (1996) to date.

Underwood has spent an extensive amount of time developing hitters at the collegiate level. During her time as head coach at Auburn, she guided Auburn athletes that re-wrote the Auburn record books. Underwood[apos]s final season in the lead chair, 1997, saw freshman Brooke McCarley establish the school record for kills (526) while her classmate, Jaunelle Hamilton, put up the third-best single-season kill mark that same year (504). Her 1997 squad hit a then-school-record .260 as a team (1854 K, 717 E, 4372 TA).

Prior to her head coaching stay at Auburn, Underwood had spent time at Louisville as the top assistant (1988-92) and at Colorado as the graduate assistant (1987-88). After leaving Auburn, Underwood moved to Texas where she coached the Texas Advantage Volleyball Club to a top-five finish at the USAV Junior Olympic Nationals Under 18 National Division in 2004 following a seventh-place finish in the 17 Open Division in 2002.

Underwood[apos]s success as a coach can be seen in her development of players. With Texas Advantage, she coached current Tiger Whitney Jacob who went on to earn First Team All-State honors as well as the District MVP honors. While at Auburn, she coached three All-SEC First Team and six second-team selections as well as two SEC Freshmen of the Year. Underwood and husband, Wendell, reside in Auburn.
