Christina Wakefield, a former standout student-athlete at Boston University and current assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University, has joined the Auburn soccer staff as an assistant coach, head coach Karen Hoppa announced July 23.

“We are really excited to add Christina to our staff,” Hoppa said. “In my opinion, she is one of the best up-and-coming young coaches in the country. She has such a bright future in front of her. I cannot wait to see what a positive impact she will make on our team.”

Wakefield joins the Tigers after spending the previous two seasons at SFA where she focused on the squad’s attacking players. Prior to working with the Ladyjacks, she served as a graduate assistant coach at Auburn during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

“I am extremely excited to be back on The Plains,” Wakefield said. “Thank you to coach Hoppa and her staff for this opportunity. Auburn has an incredible soccer tradition, and I look forward to continuing that success. I’m thrilled to be coming back to a community, university and soccer program that have given me so much. I can’t wait to get to work this season.”

After graduating from Boston in 2018, Wakefield began her coaching journey at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania as an assistant coach within the strength and conditioning department as well as with the soccer program.

During her playing career as a Terrier, Wakefield bagged 10 goals, five of which came as game-winners, and assisted on seven others over 73 appearances. She was named All-Patriot League in 2015 and 2017 as well as Boston’s offensive MVP during her final season.

Wakefield replaces former Tigers assistant Nick Flohre, who stepped down to pursue other opportunities outside of collegiate coaching.
