The Auburn University tennis team wrapped up day one of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala on Friday. The Tigers went 9-5 in singles and 3-0 in doubles, including a 3-0 singles record against Alabama.
"I am really proud of the kid's effort today," head coach Tim Gray said. "I thought the new players did well and there were a lot of bright spots today."
In singles play, sophomore Fani Chifchieva went 1-1 in the Crimson Singles draw. She fell to third-seeded Taka Bertrand of Vanderbilt, 7-5, 6-3, but came back to defeat Mari Muller of Alabama, 6-4, 7-5 in the afternoon. In the White Singles draw, third-seeded sophomore Whitney Chappell went 1-1 with a victory over Shelley Godwin of Alabama, 6-1, 6-1, and a loss to second-seeded Amanda Taylor of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore Alex Haney, seeded number one, also went 1-1 as she competed in the Black Singles draw. She defeated Arielle Vonstrolley of UNC-Greensboro, 6-1, 6-0, and fell to fourth-seeded Colleen Riley of Notre Dame, 7-5, 7-6. In Blue Singles draw action, freshman Melissa Koning fell to first seeded Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt, 6-4, 7-5, but beat Stephanie Boucher of Birmingham Southern, 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman Heather Bybee was a bright spot for Auburn, going 2-0 in the Silver Singles Draw. The Denver, Colo., native earned wins over Carly Adams of Birmingham Southern, 6-0, 6-0, and Rachel Dunlavy of Auburn-Montgomery, 6-2, 6-1. In Orange Singles, freshman Jill Hasternath defeated Whitnie Warrenn of Samford, 6-1, 6-2 and Alice Tunaru of Alabama, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Kelly Adams beat Janie Asseff of Birmingham Southern, 6-3, 6-0 and fell to Yudeshnee Pillay of Auburn-Montgomery, 6-3, 7-6.
On the doubles side, Haney/Chifchieva defeated Wade/Chifchieva of UNC-Greensboro, 8-1 in the Crimson Doubles draw. Chappell/Koning beat White/Flesher of Samford, 8-2 in the White Doubles draw, and Adams/Hasternath defeated Kafferly/Asseff of Birmingham Southern, 8-2 in Blue Doubles.
