Cross Country To Compete At UTC Invitational/Powerade Opener

AUBURN, Ala. -

The Auburn cross country team will run in its second meet of the season on Friday, Sept. 8 at the UTC Invitational/Powerade Opener hosted by UT-Chattanooga. The meet will begin at 5:45 p.m. CT with the women's 3K, followed by the men's 5K.

Last week, the women won the third annual Cougar Invitational, hosted by Columbus State, while the men finished second. Sophomore Laura Steele finished second in the 3K at 9:53, while sophomore Chase Oliver was fourth in the 5K at 16:21. The women's win was the first team title since the squad won the Georgia State University Invitational on Sept. 11, 2004.

"This will be a little bigger meet than we ran in last week," head coach Pete Watson said. "We are in the middle of heavy training right now, so our kids are running with heavy legs. We use these races as warmups to see where our fitness is and what we need to work on."

Seven Division I teams will competing at the meet on Friday. Two schools, Tennessee and Belmont, will be running their men's teams only. The other fi ve schools are Alabama, Auburn, Samford, Middle Tennessee State and Tennessee State.
