Tennis Finishes First Round Of ITA South Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -

The Auburn University tennis team wrapped up day one of the ITA South Regionals in Tuscaloosa on Thursday. Rain caused a delay in matches and forced play indoors.

In the women's A singles bracket, freshman Fani Chifchieva fell to Megan Alexander of Florida, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 and will face Martina Banikova of Mississippi State in the consolation bracket on Friday. Sophomore Whitney Chappell dropped her opening round match to Darya Ivanov of Georgia, 7-5, 6-1 and will take on Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss on Friday.

Sophomore Alex Haney lost to Diana Srebrovic of Florida, 6-3, 6-4 and will face Jessica Sweeting of South Florida in the consolation bracket on Friday. Freshman Melissa Koning brought home the lone win for the Tigers, as she defeated Rachel Pye of Florida A&M, 6-3, 6-1 and will take on Shadisha Robinson of South Florida in the second round on Friday.

Women's B singles play was moved back until Friday where freshman Heather Bybee will face Katherine Nowicki of Stetson and sophomore Kelly Adams will match up against Kimber Redfern of Florida A&M.

On the doubles side, Haney/Chifchieva will face Dariana/Nitkova of Georgia State and Chappell/Koning will face Miller/Silverio of Georgia Tech in A doubles action. In B doubles play, Adams and freshman Jil Hasternath will face Keefe/Madric of South Florida.
