The Auburn University tennis team completed day two of the ITA South Regionals in Tuscaloosa on Friday.
In the women's A singles bracket, freshman Fani Chifchieva fell to Martina Banikova of Mississippi State, 7-5, 6-4 in the consolation bracket on Friday. Sophomore Whitney Chappell beat Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the second round where she will face Gina Sabatino of Miami.
Sophomore Alex Haney defeated Jessica Sweeting of South Florida, 6-2, 7-5 and will take on Vanessa Sanchez of North Florida in the second round of the consolation bracket. Freshman Melissa Koning fell to Shadisha Robinson of South Florida in the second round of the main draw, 6-2, 6-0.
In women's B singles play, freshman Heather Bybee lost to Katherine Nowicki of Stetson, 6-2, 6-1 and will face Sara Brinkley of Florida A&M on Saturday in the second round of the consolation draw. Sophomore Kelly Adams dropped her match, 6-2, 6-2 to Kimber Redfern of Florida A&M and will face Bianca Svensson of Alabama in the second round of the consolation bracket. Freshman Jil Hasternath beat Antonia Nugent of UAB, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Megan Hunter of Central Florida, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16 in the main draw where she will take on Paulina Bigos of Alabama.
On the A doubles side, Haney and Chifchieva took down Dariana and Nitkova of Georgia State, 8-3 but lost to Frazier and Hyndman of Georgia, 9-7 in the round of 16. Chappell and Koning lost to Miller and Silverio of Georgia Tech, 8-3. In B doubles play, Adams and Hasternath defeated Keefe and Madric of South Florida, 8-1 and Joseph and Makarycheva of Mississippi State to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face Czernik and Nugent of UAB.
