AUBURN - The No. 11 Auburn Tigers dropped a tough meet to the No. 12 LSU Tigers, 195.750-194.775 before a crowd of 2,207 on Friday at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
"We got off to a little bit of a rough start on vault, but really bounced back nicely on bars," head coach Jeff Thompson said. "The scoring was a little tougher than it had been in the last couple weeks, and we didn't adjust very well to that."
Sophomore Lindsey Puckett finished second in the all around with a 39.275, her highest score since Jan. 19 when she totaled a 39.425 against Kentucky. The Lilburn, Ga., native also took second on beam after posting a 9.875, second on floor with a 9.825 total, tied for second on bars after posting a 9.775 and tied for third on vault with a 9.800.
Junior Julie Dwyer earned her fourth beam title of the year after a 9.900, and tied for third on floor with a 9.775 total.
Freshman Krissy Voss and sophomore A.J. Mills each put together a nice showing on bars with a 9.775 to place in a tie for second.
The Tigers opened the dual meet on vault, scoring a 48.775. Leading the way for the Tigers was Puckett, who finished with a 9.800, while A.J. Mills pulled in a 9.775. Carmen Nelms scored a 9.750 in her first collegiate vault attempt, and Dwyer and Voss each finished with totals of 9.725.
Heading into the second rotation, the two squads were tied at 48.775. AU totaled a 48.825 on bars where Voss, Puckett and Mills each scored a 9.775. Voss' score marked a new career high. Alicia Lenkiewicz, Jackie Smith and Dwyer each recorded 9.750's.
Auburn headed into the third rotation trailing 97.900 to 97.600, and scored a 48.950 on beam. Dwyer recorded her third score of 9.900 or higher this season, as she scored a 9.900. Puckett tied a season high for her 9.875 effort, while Voss totaled her second highest score with a 9.750. Somero came through with a 9.725 and Nelms recorded a 9.700.
The Tigers gained .125 points worth of ground and found themselves down 146.725-146.550 heading into the final rotation. Two falls on floor would seal AU's fate, as the team totaled a 48.225. Puckett scored a 9.825, while Dwyer was right behind her with a 9.775. Rounding out the scoring was a pair of 9.725's by Voss and Nelms, and Mills' total of 9.175.
"Hopefully this will light a fire under us and we will bounce back with a strong showing next week," Thompson said.
Auburn will be in action next week as they hit the road to take on No. 2 Georgia on Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
