Louisville, Kentucky - The Tigers defeated Lousville 5-2 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, Ky. With the win, Auburn improves to 4-2 on the year, while Louisville falls to 3-9.
The match began as Auburn edged the Cardinals in the doubles point. Louisville's No. 3 pair of Natalia Baez and Natalie Laszkowski won 8-3 over Kelly Adams and Jil Hastenrath of Auburn. Auburn's Fani Chifchieva and Whitney Chappell defeated Bianca Gorbea and Jo-Ann Van Aerde 8-4. Melissa Koning and Alex Haney won a hard-fought match agianst Lauren Imre and Robyn White of the Cardinals, 9-8.
"Winning the doubles point was critical and Alex and Mel did a great job staying focused inspite of facing a match point in the tiebreaker. This is the type of gritty play that we need to produce everyday. If we keep this same focus and intensity we can do some great things this year." Auburn Head Coach Tim Gray said.
U of L scored their two points in singles, both in three sets. The Cardinal's Bianca Gorbea won her first set 6-3 and then dropped the second set 6-3 to Jil Hastenrath. Gorbea won the third set 6-2. Kelly Adams, at the No. 6 spot, lost to Natalia Baez 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Chappell's match came down to the last set as well when she lost the first set 6-3, won the second set 6-3 and then won the tiebreaker 10-5 over Aerde at No. 4. Alex Haney also won a three set battle after losing the first set 6-4 but then won 6-0, 6-4 over Robyn White. Chifchieva fell to Imre 6-0, 6-2, and Koning won 6-4, 6-0 over Laszkowski at No. 2.
