Auburn Sweeps Past Mercer And Florida A&M

The No. 75 Auburn Tigers (2-0) made short work of its opponents, sweeping both Mercer (0-2) and Florida A&M (0-3), 7-0 on Saturday at the Auburn Tennis Complex. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The Tigers did not drop a set the entire day, and no opponent won more than four games in a singles or doubles match.

"I thought we did a great job of keeping our intensity level up today," head coach Tim Gray said. "I think we showed signs of improvement from our opening tournament, and that's what we are looking for early in the season."

In singles play, redshirt freshman Fani Chifchieva blew by Lauriane <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Auvergne of Mercer, 6-0, 6-1 and Rachel Pye of Florida A&M, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Alex Haney coasted to wins over Anna Wiselander of Mercer, 6-0, 6-3 and Alice Izomor of A&M, 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 3 position, freshman Melissa Koning took wins over Irys Citko of Mercer, 6-1, 6-0 and Sarah Brinkley of A&M, 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 4, sophomore Whitney Chappell dropped just two games all day by beating Rachel Kerley of Mercer, 6-0, 6-0 and Kimber Redfern of A&M, 6-2, 6-0. In No. 5 action, freshman Jil Hastenrath never dropped a game on the day with victories over Priscilla Dias of Mercer, 6-0, 6-0 and Ashley Green of A&M, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 6 position, Kelly Adams picked up wins over Kelly Blount of Mercer, 6-1, 6-2 and Samaria Bailey, 6-0, 6-2.

On the doubles side, Haney/Koning cruised to a pair of 8-1 wins over Blount/Wiselander of Mercer and Pye/Redfern of A&M. Chappel/Adams picked up victories over Dias/Auvergne of Mercer, 8-1 and Brinkley/Izomor of A&M, 8-4. Finally, Chifchieva picked up wins in both of her matches, as she partnered with Hasternath to beat Kerley/Sachs of Mercer, 8-0. She then paired with Heather Bybee to earn an 8-1 win over Green/Bailey of A&M.

Auburn will travel to the state of Texas next weekend to take on No. 29 Texas A&M in College Station on Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m. The Tigers will then head to Houston to face No. 64 Rice on Feb. 11 at 1:30.
