Baton Rouge, La. - Seventh-seeded Auburn men's tennis defeated 10-seeded Kentucky, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the SEC Tournament. Auburn moved to 14-8, while Kentucky dropped to 13-15. Auburn will take on second-seeded Ole Miss on Friday at 11 a.m. at the W.T. "Dub" Robinson Tennis Stadium in Baton Rouge.
Auburn got the start that it wanted by taking the doubles point with wins on court one and three. No. 44 Robbert Lathouwers and Alex Schweizer got past Kentucky's Bruno Agostinelli and Kenny Hodge, 8-5. The Wildcats took the next match as No. 49 Peter Bjork and Will Ward defeated Pawel Dilaj and Terence Nugent, 8-6. Auburn battled it out on court three for the point and came out ahead. Lukas Marsoun and Alexey Tsyrenov teamed up to beat Shane Collins and Marcus Sundh, 9-7.
The Tigers controlled the momentum after doubles and it showed in singles play. Auburn burst out with three straight wins on courts four, five and six to clinch the win. Tsyrenov put the Tigers up 2-0 after making quick work of Jorge Jorge, 6-2, 6-1. Dilaj followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hdoge. Milan Krnjetin earned the fourth and final point for Auburn, cruising past Collins, 6-1, 6-1.
No. 57 Schweizer, No. 38 Lathouwers and Marsoun were all in the lead on courts one, two and three, respectively, but were not asked to finish.
