ATLANTA - Two Tigers came away with championships Sunday as the Georgia Tech Tennis Invitational concluded in Atlanta. Auburn's Terence Nugent won the "B" singles championship while teammate Nick Maurillo won the "B" singles consolation bracket.
"Overall, I was very happy with how we did this weekend," said head coach Eric Shore. "We haven't spent a lot of time on our doubles and we need to work on that, but we have some guys playing well and hopefully they will continue over the next couple weeks."
In a showdown between teammates, Nugent took down Auburn newcomer Alex Petropoulos, 6-4, 6-3 in the "B" singles championship match. Nugent entered the tournament as the No. 2 overall seed in the bracket.
"I expect good things from Terence this year and I think he is very capable of doing that what he did," said Shore. "I was a little surprised about Alex, making it to the finals in his first tournament. I'm proud of him."
Maurillo started out in the "B" singles bracket, but fell to the consolation bracket after losing his first-round match. He won with ease in his first three matches, but had to go to three sets against Georgia Tech's George Gvelesiani to win the championship match (2-6, 7-5, 6-1).
"Nick really showed me something by coming back and winning the consolation round," said Shore. "After losing in the first round, I was really proud of him for coming back to get the win."
The Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 at the South Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C.
