TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Junior Jakob Andkjaer led Auburn in the first day of the Alabama Classic, taking first in the 50m free with a time of 22.47, leading a group of four Auburn swimmers that finished in the top five of their respective events on Friday.
Andkjaer is part of a group of 12 Tigers competing this weekend at the Alabama Classic, a long course meters event in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The rest of Auburn's swimmers are at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Short Course Championships while the Tiger divers are set to compete this weekend at the LSU Diving Invitational.
Leading the way for the women was freshman Josefin Wede as she stepped up in the women's 200m IM, coming in runner-up with a time of 2:19.34.
In the men's 400m free, Pascal Wollach led the way with a fifth-place finish, coming in with a time of 4:02.71. Senior Jeff Smith followed with a time of 4:06.41, placing 11th while Marshel Renz rounded out the Auburn contingent in 19th with a time of 4:20.38.
Renz, swimming in his second final of the night, finished 13th in the men's 200m IM with a time of 2:15.59. John Snyder followed in 16th with a time of 2:17.13.
Freshmen Julie Golden and Wede led the Tigers in the 50m free. Golden finished third in the event with at time of 26.86 while Wede followed in 11th with a time of 27.85. Kara Nelson also competed in the event, finishing 17th with a time of 28.38.
In the men's 50m free, it was Kyle Maese and David Mathews trailing Andkjaer, finishing 12th and 15th, respectively in the event. Maese finished in 24.62 while Mathews came in at 24.80.
Action continues Saturday with the 400m IM, 100m fly, 200m free, 100m breast and 100m back.
