No. 27 AU Tennis Shuts Down Georgetown

Washington, D.C - The No. 27 Auburn women's tennis team (3-1, 0-0 SEC) shut-out its third-straight opponent with a 7-0 win over Georgetown in Washington, D.C.

"I am very pleased with our efforts today," said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. "The team was very focused, and they took care of business today. We need to give that same effort tomorrow."

Auburn's Fani Chifchieva did not give up a singles set for the second match in-a-row. She defeated Courtney Olsen in the number one spot. Chifchieva, along with the rest of the Tigers, holds a 3-1 singles record in 2008.

Senior Alex Haney defeated Stephanie Cohen 6-2, 6-4, in the two spot. Playing number three singles, sophomore Melissa Koning defated Liz Winokur 6-1, 6-2. Team captain Whitney Chappell defeated Maxi Thiels 6-1, 6-2, in the four singles spot. Sophomore Jil Hastenrath defeated Caroline Kuehn 6-2, 6-1. In the six spot, freshman Gaby Beelen defeated Elizabeth Sullivan 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles action, Chifchieva and Koning paired up to defeat Georgetown's Olsen and Cohen 8-2. Chappell and Haney defeated Sullivan and Winokur 8-0. In the number three doubles spot, Beelen and Hastenrath defeated Alex Sebia and Thiels 8-1.

The Tigers will take on the University of Maryland Terrapins on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT. The Tigers will return to the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn on Feb. 12, to take on the Georgia State Panthers.
