Auburn, Ala. - The Auburn women's basketball team (18-10, 6-7 SEC) fell 73-56 to No. 23 Vanderbilt (21-7, 10-3 SEC) on Thursday in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. Freshman forward Cassie Moore dominated the boards, turning in a career high 12 rebounds to lead Auburn.
"We ran across a hot Vanderbilt team," said Auburn head coach Nell Fortner. "They shot the ball extremely well, and Jessica Mooney was the X-factor; she was outstanding today. We just didn't respond with any kind of good shooting and we lost our confidence."
Auburn began the game trading basket-for-basket with Vanderbilt until just under 12 minutes in the first half when the Commodores went on a 27-13 scoring run. At the half, the Commodores led the Tigers 42-26. In the beginning of the second half, the Tigers cut the Commodores' lead to 10, but were unable to pull any closer.
Junior guard DeWanna Bonner led the Tigers with 19 points, her ninth-consecutive double-digit game. Bonner added 10 rebounds, earning her 13th double-double of the season and fourth straight. Junior guard Sherell Hobbs followed closely behind Bonner with 18 points, her 16th-consecutive double-digit game.
Vanderbilt had three players with double-digit points. Meredith Marsh and Jessica Mooney led the team, each with 19 points. Three-pointers accounted for 15 of Marsh's points, as she shot 5-of-7. Christina Risper led the team with 12 rebounds.
Auburn outplayed the Commodores on boards, pulling down 39 rebounds to the Commodores' 37. Twenty of AU's boards were on offense.
The Tigers made only 3-of-14 three-point shots, to Vanderbilt's 10-of-20. Overall, Auburn shot 32 percent from the field. Vanderbilt shot 47 percent. Auburn made 70.8 percent from the free-throw line, leading Vanderbilt's 55.6 percent. The Commodores bench made the difference, outscoring Auburn 30 to five.
Auburn led with five steals to Vanderbilt's four, but the Tigers committed 13 turnovers to the Commodores' 11.
Auburn will conclude its regular season on Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m., in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum, playing host to Arkansas. The Tigers will honor its three seniors at the beginning of the game - Tamela McCorvey, Alexis Ogubie and Juanitta Wallace.
