State College, Penn. - Auburn senior Julie Dwyer will compete in her fourth straight NCAA Championship as she placed second in the all-around scoring 49.450 at the Northeast Regional. Auburn scored 195.150 on its way to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional hosted by Penn State.
"Julie makes history tonight as the first Auburn gymnast to qualify for the NCAA Championship four years in-a-row," said Auburn head coach Jeff Thompson. "She was one vault away from becoming the Northeast Regional Vault Champion, but Tiffany Tolnay scored a 9.95 on Georgia's last vault."
Dwyer placed second on vault scoring 9.925. Dwyer, who is a two-time All-American as an individual for Auburn, will compete in her fourth NCAA Championship as an individual.
Georgia placed first scoring 197.775. Denver University placed second followed by Penn State. Iowa State and Brigham Young brought up the fifth and sixth spots.
"The team is very disappointed that we are not moving on," Thompson said. "It is a shame that we picked tonight to count two falls on beam for only the second time this season. But we are very proud of the way the team finished. They never gave up. I think we tend to forget sometimes that these are 18 to 22 year-old-college students and not professional athletes. Sometimes it's harder than others to stay on a four-inch-wide beam."
Auburn started the meet on bars. The Tigers collectively scored 48.500. A.J. Mills and Julie Dyer led Auburn each scoring 9.85. Puckett followed with a 9.750. Aimee Goheen scored 9.700.
Auburn rotated from bars to beam and got off to a great start with a 9.800 from Kayla Gies. However, Auburn had three gymnasts fall, counting two of them. Auburn's team score dropped to a 47.850 on beam, 96.800 overall.
The Tigers returned from a bye with a solid 49.175 on floor. Mills led the Tigers scoring 9.875, followed by Puckett scoring 9.850. Dwyer and Rachel Inniss each scored a pair of 9.825's.
Claire Seiffert started Auburn's vault line-up tying a career high 9.850. Puckett and followed suit scoring 9.850. Dwyer led the Tigers scoring 9.925. Collectively, the Tigers vaulted for a team score of 49.175.
