Men's Tennis Completes Fall Season On Final Day Of Auburn Fall Classic

AUBURN - The Auburn men's tennis team finished the 2008 Auburn Fall Classic at the Yarbrough Tennis Center and closed out their fall season on Sunday, winning all but one of its matches.

The final day began with South Carolina taking on Samford in the morning matches. South Carolina won all three of the doubles matches and took five of seven in singles. In the afternoon, it was Auburn facing Troy to wrap up the tournament.

The Tigers started strong in doubles competition with senior Alexey Tsyrenov and freshman Alex Stamchev defeating Troy's Bastian Maucher and Mario Silva by a score of 8-2. The Auburn pair finished with a 2-1 record for the weekend.

Milan Krnjetin and Nick Maurillo followed with another 8-2 win over Diego Martinez and Maxime Zamore. But, the 2-0 start came to an end when Michel Monteiro and Alex Petropoulos fell to Benjamin Chomette and Phil Janz, 8-6.

As the doubles matches were taking place, Powell Porter took on Andrey Morozov in the first singles match of the afternoon and won 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

After the break, the rest of the Auburn men began their singles matches. Starting things off was Tsyrenov, who erupted with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Chomette. Tsyrenov finished the weekend with a 2-1 singles record.

On court two, Stamchev took a 6-2, 6-0 win over Silva, while Krnjetin defeated Maucher, 6-4, 6-1, on court three.

With the Tigers off to a 4-0 singles start, junior Maurillo and sophomore Monteiro came through with two more Auburn wins.

Maurillo battled Martinez and took a 6-2, 6-2 win while Monteiro had a 6-4, 6-4 win over Janz.

In the last match of the day, Petropoulos took on Zamore in a close matchup and found a 6-4, 6-4 win, giving the Tigers a 7-0 performance for singles on the day.

Finishing 9-1 on the day, Auburn finished the weekend with a 23-7 record.

The Tigers look to ride their fall momentum into the spring as they begin their spring season at the Auburn Spring Classic, January 21-23.
