Men Struggle Against Stanford in Round Two
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 31 Auburn men's tennis team faced off against No. 11 Stanford in the second day of the ITA National Indoor Qualifier, taking a 5-2 loss.
The Tigers took the courts in the morning against Stanford in the weekend final, deciding which team would advance to the national finals held in Chicago.
Starting the morning with doubles, Auburn earned the overall point as the men took two of the three match-ups. Giving the Tigers their first win of the day was Alexey Tsyrenov and Tim Puetz, the No. 10 ranked doubles team in the nation, as they beat Richard Wire and Blake Muller, 8-3.
In the second doubles match to finish, Milan Krnjetin and Alex Petropoulos faced an 8-2 loss against Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly. However, the Tigers clinched the doubles point as Lukas Marsoun and Alex Stamchev earned an 8-5 win over Ryan Thacher and Matt Bruch.
After taking doubles competition, the Auburn men seemed to struggle to finish the day in singles.
In the first singles match to finish, Tim Puetz defeated Ryan Thacher 6-2, 6-3. Puetz finished the weekend undefeated, both in singles and doubles.
Despite taking an early lead, the Tigers were unable to find another singles point. Falling first was Alex Stamchev in his 6-4, 6-4 loss against No. 62 Richard Wire. Auburn's next loss came as Milan Krnjetin took a 7-6, 6-4 defeat against Blake Muller. Alex Petropoulos and Lukas Marsoun lost to Gregory Hirshman (6-2, 6-3) and Matt Bruch (6-2, 6-4), respectively.
The final match of the day ended with No. 48 Alexey Tsyrenov battling No. 33 Alex Clayton. Tsyrenov, despite winning the first set, was unable to hold on as he took a 0-6, 7-6, 6-0 loss to end the weekend.
Auburn finished the weekend 1-1, after defeating No. 29 Vanderbilt in yesterday's action.
The Tigers will return to action at home as they host UAB on Friday, February 6 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
