NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tim Puetz came away with the singles title, while he and partner Alex Stamchev captured the doubles title on Sunday at the Wilson/ITA South Regional in New Orleans held on the campuses of Tulane and University of New Orleans.

"It was a great weekend for our program and I'm very proud of Tim and Alex," Eric Shore, head men's tennis coach, said. "Tim got better and better as the tournament went on and played his best in the final match. He and Alex played great together and it's great to see both of their hard work pay off."

Puetz, a junior from Vsiugen, Germany, entered the tournament as the second-seeded singles player and faced fifth-seeded George Coupland of Mississippi State in the singles final on Sunday morning. Puetz captured the tournament title with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Coupland.

"My goal has always been to win a title for Auburn and I'm happy I was able to do that today," Puetz said. "I had a rough start to the tournament, but I refocused and played a lot better from that point on. I feel great and am very happy with today's results."

Stamchev and Puetz came into the tournament as the top-seeded doubles pair, despite only playing together one other time previous to this weekend. The duo started the day with an 8-5 victory over UNO's Benjamin Smith and Calvin Kemp in the semifinals. Stamchev and Puetz closed out the tournament with 8-3 win over in-state rival Trey Walston and Houssam Yassine of Alabama to take the doubles title.

"We played very well this weekend," Stamchev, a sophomore from Pleven, Bulgaria, said, "We are getting better together and I'm very happy that we were able to come away with the title."

With the wins, the pair qualified for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held in New Haven, Conn., on the campus of Yale University, Nov. 5-8. Puetz and Stamchev will compete in the doubles draw, while Puetz will take part in the 32-individual singles draw.

"Being one of 32 players to qualify in singles is really exciting," Puetz said. "It is a great honor and I'm happy to be a part of it."

"Having both qualify for the indoor tournament is great," Shore said. "It's a good opportunity for both of them to face some tough competition."

The team returns to the court when they travel to Columbia, S.C. for the South Carolina Tournament, Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
