AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn senior cross country runner Felix Kiboiywo has been named the 2009 NCAA South Region Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA announced Wednesday.
The three-time NCAA South Regional Champion earned the honor for the third time during his career after winning the Nov. 14 South Regional with a career-best 10K time of 29:35.85. The mark eclipsed his previous best time of 30:04.70 that was clocked at last season's race.
The Eldoret, Kenya, native is hitting his stride after struggling with injuries earlier in the season, which forced him to miss the season-opening Troy Trojan Invitational as well as the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
Kiboiywo and the rest of the Auburn cross country team will look to improve on his 28th-place finish at last season's NCAA Championships at Indiana State University, who will host the NCAA Championships, Mon., Nov. 23, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind.
The men's race will begin at 11:08 a.m. Central time. The race will be broadcast live on Versus Network and streamed online via NCAA.com.
