Oxford, Miss. - Ole Miss rallied from a 4-1 deficit to claim a 6-5 victory over the Auburn softball team and prevent a series sweep by the Tigers Sunday afternoon.
Auburn dropped to 25-23 overall and 8-17 in the Southeastern Conference. Ole Miss improved to 24-23 overall and 6-15 in the SEC. The Tigers return to action with a home game Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT against Jacksonville State.
Auburn reliever Jenee Loree took the loss against Ole Miss to fall to 3-5 on the season. Loree allowed one run, earned, on one hit with one walk in 0.2 innings of work.
Anna Thompson started and went just one complete inning before being lifted after hitting the first batter of the second inning. Thompson returned to record the last out of the sixth inning. For the game, Thompson threw 1.1 innings, allowed one run, earned, with two walks, no hits and one strikeout. Angel Bunner threw 4.0 innings in relief of Thompson, allowing four runs, earned, on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Becky Nye improved to 7-10 after earning the win in relief. Nye threw 2.0 innings, allowed one run, earned, on one hit.
Both teams scored a run in the second, with Krista Clyde driving in Lauren Guzman (walk) with a fielder's choice and Ole Miss' Amber Tramp (HBP) scoring on an infield ground ball to second by Aly Presswood as the second inning ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Tigers took a 4-1 lead, scoring a single run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Kelsey Cartwright forced a run home with a bases loaded walk that plated Katie Colton (HBP) in the third inning. Caitlin Stangl scored when Amber Harrison's ground ball was booted by third baseman Cali Overbeck in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Kelley Smiley scored on a single to center by Clyde to give the Tigers a 4-1 edge.
Ole Miss tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Tramp cranked a two-out, three-run home run off Bunner.
Kyndall White quickly broke the tie when she launched her 17th career home run. White's solo shot led off the sixth inning, gave Auburn a 5-4 lead and moved White into sole possession of 10th place in the Auburn career home run record books.
The Rebels rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Corrine Doornberg plated Ashley Dowdy (fielder's choice) with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at 5-5. Lauren Grill gave the Rebels a 6-5 lead with an RBI single that scored Courtnie Ghinaudo.
Nye pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Rebels to preserve the 6-5 victory and prevent the series sweep.
