WACO, Texas - Auburn sophomores Lucas Lopasso and Tim Hewitt concluded competition at the HEB Baylor Men's Tennis Invitational Sunday afternoon, capturing the doubles B draw tournament title.
The duo faced TCU's Soren Goritzka and Cameron Nash in the doubles B draw finals and the two teams battled to an 8-8 tie in the set. Lopasso and Hewitt capitalized during the tiebreak and took the match, 9-8 (4), to win the title.
"I'm very proud of Lucas (Lopasso) and Tim (Hewitt)," associate head coach Gabor Pelva said. "They both played very well and it was a great way to end the weekend."
Lopasso also competed in singles, reaching the semifinals of singles B draw Saturday night. He opened Sunday's competition with a three-set thriller over Texas A&M's Daniel Brown to advance to the finals. Lopasso took the first set by a score of 6-2, but Brown responded with a 6-2 win in set two. The pair battled in the final set until Lopasso came out on top with a 7-5 victory.
However, due to scheduling conflicts, Lopasso withdrew from the singles final to focus on doubles competition.
"Lucas played very tough all weekend and his effort was unmatched," Pelva said. "I'm especially proud of his performance and am looking forward to seeing how he progresses the rest of the season."
Up next for Auburn is a pair of tournaments next weekend. Senior Tim Puetz and junior Alex Stamchev are set to compete in the D'Novo ITA All-American Tournament held in Tulsa, Okla., while the rest of the squad will travel to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Fall Classic.
