AUBURN - Auburn track and field athletes won three more events Saturday at the Seminole Invitational hosted by Florida State, bringing the Tigers' number of victories during the two-day meet to six.
"This weekend was a good test for us," said head coach Ralph Spry. "Florida State presented us with tough competition and the weather was a challenge because we hadn't had hot weather like today to contend with yet this year. It was a new situation for us, but we responded and had some really fast races today."
All three of Saturday's titles came in the sprints. The Tigers had three of the top four finishers in the women's 200 meters, with senior Sheniqua Ferguson taking the top spot with a time of 22.92 that ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this year. Senior Joanna Atkins was second in 23.28 seconds, while senior Cache Armbrister was fourth in 23.72.
Atkins and Ferguson ran the first two legs of Auburn's 4x100-meter relay team that won with a time of 43.84 seconds that was just .04 seconds off their season-best time from last weekend. Sophomore Kai Selvon and junior Nivea Smith ran the third and fourth legs, respectively.
The Tigers' other victory came in the men's 200 meters, where sophomore Harry Adams took the title with a time of 20.84 seconds into a headwind, which is just one tenth of a second off his season best that ranks tied for eighth nationally.
In addition, Auburn had three of the top five finishers in the women's 100 meters. Smith was second in 11.57 seconds, while junior Ashley Cruder (11.72) and junior CeCe Williams (11.92) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Freshman Keenan Brock also ran well in the sprints, finishing fourth in the men's 100 meters in 10.50 seconds, and sixth in the 200 meters in 21.37 seconds.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Clay Porter, Adams, freshman Kelley Cutrell and senior Neil Danville was third overall and second among collegiate teams with a time of 3:14.94. Also finishing third was freshman Marcus Popenfoose in the shot put with a mark of 16.64 meters (54-7.25).
Other top five finishers for Auburn on Saturday included senior Brittany Mattrella in the women's pole vault (5th, 3.50 meters/11-5.75), freshman Tori Nwadiogbu in the women's discus (5th, 37.28 meters/122-4), freshman Niklas Buhner in the men's 1500 meters (5th, 3:47.18) and freshman Nick Farrell in the men's pole vault (tied for 5th, 4.75 meters/15-7).
"We accomplished what we needed to accomplish," said Spry. "Going into our home meet next weekend I feel like we're right where we need to be. Everybody we had competing is healthy, which is always a big concern. Right now I'm pleased with our progress."
The Tigers will host the War Eagle Invitational at Hutsell-Rosen Track next Friday and Saturday. The meet is free and open to the public.
