AUBURN - Auburn junior Andreas Mies advanced to the main draw singles quarterfinals, and all three Tiger doubles teams won their second-round matches Friday on the second day of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Mies started his day with a win over Alabama's Michael Thompson, 6-0, 6-4, then came back in the afternoon to defeat UAB's Chris Helliar in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. He will face second-seeded and 36th-ranked Louis Cant of Mississippi State in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Two other Tigers won their third-round matches but fell in the round of 16. No. 57 Alex Stamchev defeated UAB's Danny Manlow 6-1, 6-3, then took 73rd-ranked James Chaudry of Mississippi State to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1). Michael Wardell advanced to the fourth round with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette's Rick DeGroot, then fell to Mark Bowtell of LSU in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Bowtell had earlier eliminated Auburn's No. 54 Dennis Lengsfeld in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Lucas Lopasso also dropped his third-round match to LSU's 39th-ranked Neil Skupski, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
In doubles, the 26th-ranked tandem of Stamchev and Mies blanked the Tulane duo of Adam Bernstein and Etham Frenkel, 8-0, to move onto the third round. The 30th-ranked team of Lengsfeld and Daniel Cochrane also moved on with an 8-4 win over Stuart Kenyon and Harris Barnard of Alabama. A third Tiger team, Lopasso and Rafael Rondino, defeated David Zimmermann and Daniel Moser of UAB, 8-4.
Wardell teamed up with Nicholls State's Dimitry Despetovski in doubles competition as well, and the pair dropped a hard-fought 9-8 (4) decision to Mississippi State's George Coupland and Trey Seymour.
Cochrane and Rondino both won a pair of matches in the consolation singles flight. They will both play at 10 a.m. Saturday.
All eight doubles third-round matches begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Singles play in the main draw and consolation brackets is slated to get underway at 10 a.m.
