AUBURN - Auburn junior Andreas Mies won his quarterfinal match on Saturday, advancing to the main draw singles semifinals at the USTA/ITA Men's Southern Regional Championships, being played at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Mies, ranked 70th in the nation, earned a big win in the quarters with a hard-fought, three-set victory over No. 36-ranked Louis Cant of Mississippi State, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3. He will face another MSU Bulldog in 46th-ranked Malte Stropp at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the tournament semifinals.
Sophomore Daniel Cochrane also stayed alive in the consolation singles bracket, earning a pair of wins Saturday to move onto the semifinals. Cochrane downed Ole Miss' Adrian Skogeng 6-1, 6-3 in the third round, then took down Troy's Sami Ghorbel in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
The nation's 30th-ranked doubles team of Cochrane and Dennis Lengsfeld won their third-round match over Tulane's Shaye Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 8-5. The Auburn team, however, would fall in the quarterfinals to Johan Lutjen and Johan Backstrom of Ole Miss, 8-0.
Lutjen and Backstrom had earlier knocked out the Auburn team of Lucas Lopasso and Rafael Rondino by an 8-2 score. The team of Alex Stamchev and Mies withdrew from the doubles competition after Stamchev became ill and was unable to continue, allowing the Alabama team of Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga to advance via walkover.
Semifinal play for doubles and the consolation draw begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, while the main draw singles semifinals are set to begin at 10:30 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
