TULSA, Okla. - The Auburn men's tennis team concluded its first day in the singles qualifying round with a 2-2 record at the ITA Men's All-American Championship on Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Auburn senior Alex Stamchev, ranked No. 57 in the preseason ITA rankings, defeated Virginia's Steven Eelkman Rooda in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 7-5, to advance to the second round. Also earning a victory was junior and 70th-ranked Andreas Mies, who cruised past Purdue's Mark Kovacs, 6-1, 6-2.
The sixth-seeded Stamchev will square off with Vanderbilt's Gonzales Austin at 8 a.m. Tuesday while Mies will compete against Baylor's Mate Zsiga.
Falling in the first round was sophomore Daniel Cochrane, who lost to Georgia Tech's No. 85-ranked Kevin King, 6-3, 7-5, and No. 54 Dennis Lengsfeld, who was defeated by Radford's No. 112-ranked Nicholas Sayer, 7-6 (7), 6-4.
Although Cochrane and Lengsfeld were defeated in the singles tournament, the 30th-ranked duo will kick off the doubles qualifying draw as the No. 2 seed against George Washington's duo of Ugur Atalay and Francisco Dias at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
