Shanteau Finishes Third in 200 Breast Final at Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. - Former Auburn swimmer Eric Shanteau missed out on qualifying for a second event at the 2012 London Olympics by eight-hundredths of a second, finishing third in the 200-meter breaststroke final Friday night at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Shanteau, a 2006 Auburn graduate and the American record-holder who is already headed to London in the 100 breaststroke, touched third in a time of 2:10.05, just .08 behind runner-up Clark Burckle (2:09.97). Scott Weltz became a first-time Olympian, winning the final in 2:09.01.

Another former Auburn swimmer, Micah Lawrence, advanced to the women's 200 breaststroke final with a time of 2:24.12 to win her heat. She was the second overall qualifier and will swim in the final Saturday night.

Auburn will have 14 swimmers competing in prelims Saturday. A total of nine men will compete in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while rising junior Katie Gardocki will swim the women's 800 freestyle and four newcomers this fall will swim in the women's 200 backstroke. Heat sheets, live timing and live video will be available through USASwimming.org.
