AUBURN - Auburn's stay at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships came to a close Friday as the remaining Tigers in the draw fell in their respective matches at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Senior Lucas Lopasso, seeded 10th in the tournament, won his opening match of the day in the third round of the main singles draw with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Samford's Austin Akers. But Lopasso would bow out in the fourth round to top-seeded Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss, dropping a 7-6 (6), 6-3 decision.
Sophomore Lukas Ollert dropped his third-round match to 15th-seeded Stefan Lindmark of Ole Miss, 7-6 (1), 6-1. And transfer Lucian Gheorghe fell to fifth-seeded Malte Stropp of Mississippi State, 6-0, 6-0.
In the consolation singles draw, senior Michael Wardell came up short against Troy's Mansingh Athare, 7-6, 6-4, in a second-round match. And senior Andreas Mies was forced to withdraw due to illness. That also affected the doubles team of Mies and Lopasso, which also had to withdraw.
The USTA/ITA Southern Regional continues through Monday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Auburn's team will be back in action next weekend at the UNLV Fall Invitational.
