TULSA, Okla. - The top Auburn men's tennis doubles team of senior Andreas Mies and junior Daniel Cochrane won their second and third matches in two days Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships at the Case Tennis Center.
Mies and Cochrane, ranked 24th in the ITA's preseason rankings, took down a pair of ranked foes on Friday. The Tigers opened the day with a 9-7 win over Southern California's sixth-seeded and 12th-ranked team of Raymond Sarmiento and Roberto Quiroz, this after defeating the Baylor duo of Marko Krikovic and Robert Verzaal late Thursday night, 8-3.
In the quarterfinal round, the Auburn pair took down an SEC foe with an 8-5 win over Mississippi State's 41st-ranked team of Malte Stropp and Jordan Angus to move into the semifinal round.
Mies and Cochrane will face Alexander Domijan and Harrison Richmond of Virginia in Saturday's semifinal round, set to begin at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Mies will be playing his sixth match in three days Saturday. He played a pair of tough, three-set singles matches in the main draw Thursday afternoon, winning a 5-7, 6-2, 3-0 (ret.) decision over 25th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann of Southern California before dropping a three-set heartbreaker to Clemson's 32nd-ranked Yannick Maden, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6.
This is Mies' second straight trip to the doubles semifinals at the All-American Championships. Last year, he and then-senior Alex Stamchev made their way into the semis before falling to the nation's No. 1-ranked team.
