Softball Tops Southern 7-1

Corpus Christi, Texas - In the first game of the day, Auburn scored in five of the first six innings of the game to claim a 7-1 win over Southern University. Auburn improved to 12-3 while Southern dropped to 0-13. Auburn plays New Mexico at 1 p.m. today.

Lexi Davis started and earned the win to improve to 4-2. Davis allowed just one hit, did not issue a walk, struck out five in four innings of work. Davis retired the last 11 batters she faced. Tiffany Howard made her first pitching appearance, throwing the final three innings allowing one run, earned, on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Carla Arismendi started and took the loss to fall to 0-6. Arismendi went five innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Brooke Lathan's single through the left side scored Morgan Estell from third to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Estell drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Branndi Melero. Emily Carosone followed Lathan with a single to put runners on second and first. After a ground out moved the runners up a base each, a wild pitch scored Lathan to make it a 2-0 Auburn lead.

The Tigers increased their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Lathan led off with a double and scored on Emily Carosone's single to center, making it 3-0. Carosone took second on the relay throw home and advanced to third on a ground out. Austyn West brought Carosone home with a sacrifice fly to left to give the Tigers a 4-0 edge.

Carosone picked up her second RBI of the game with a triple in the bottom of the fourth that scored Lathan, giving Auburn a 5-0 lead. Lathan reached on a throwing error by shortstop Shawntall Steamer with two outs in the inning.

In the bottom of fifth, McKenzie Kilpatrick gave the Tigers a 6-0 margin with a one-out, solo home run to left. It was Kilpatrick's first home run of the season and second of her career.

The Tigers made it 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Estell led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Kristyn Richards then hit a ground ball that went under the second baseman's glove for an error, allowing Estell to score.

Southern broke up the shutout bid with a bases loaded single in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Shabanese Brown singled to right to score Steamer, who led off with a walk, to make it a 7-1 game. Howard, however, would limit the Jaguars to one run as she ended the game on her fifth strikeout of the day.
