AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn men's tennis team wrapped up its season-opening homestand with an impressive 7-0 sweep of Troy on Wednesday night inside the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Tigers (3-0) posted their 20th straight win over the Trojans (0-4) in a series that dates back to 1956. Auburn remained unbeaten in both singles and doubles this season and did not lose a set against Troy on Wednesday.
"We played well, but I didn't think we had enough energy. I felt like we were a little flat at the start, but got through it and played well after that," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "We were focused and we did what we had to do tonight."
Auburn clinched the doubles point over the Trojans behind strong play from their top two doubles tandems. Daniel Cochrane and Petar Tomic defeated Troy's Tommy Cundy and Pablo Moreno 6-0 in No. 2 doubles to win the first match of the night. Cochrane/Tomic have dropped just four games in three matches when playing together in doubles so far this season.
The 37th-ranked duo of Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert claimed the doubles point for Auburn, finishing off Troy's Mansingh Athare and Sami Ghorbel 6-2 in No. 1 doubles.
Tomic got on Auburn on the board first from the No. 5 singles position with a win over Troy's Tadju Davis, 6-2, 6-0. Joseph Van Dooren defeated Pablo Moreno 6-3, 6-1 in No. 6 singles to put the Tigers up 3-0 against the Trojans.
Cochrane provided the match-clinching win at the No. 1 spot, knocking off Troy's Gabriel Sciacca Dias, 6-3, 6-1 to earn his third win of the season. Dante Saleh cruised to his third victory of the dual match season, taking down Troy's Daniel Bustamante, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles.
Auburn closed out the match as Lengsfeld and Ollert wrapped up their respective matches almost simultaneously. Lengsfeld earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Troy's Mansingh Athare, while Ollert downed Ghorbel, 6-3, 6-1.
"In singles, we got better tonight. We played well but we've got to play better. This weekend we will face some adversity and we'll have to see how we handle it. This will be a good barometer to see where we are," Shore said.
The Tigers head to Waco, Texas, this Saturday and Sunday for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend and National Indoors qualifier. Auburn will face No. 32 Drake University at noon on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center, followed by a matchup against Baylor or Boise State on Sunday.
