ATLANTA - Senior Daniel Cochrane provided the Tigers with the clinching win, posting a three-set victory on court two as the No. 24 Auburn men's tennis team knocked off No. 46 Georgia Tech, 4-3 on Friday night at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
Auburn (9-1) has won six straight matches as the Tigers handed Georgia Tech (4-1) its first loss of the dual match season.
Auburn's two seniors provided the tying and the clinching win in singles play. With the match tied at 3-3, Cochrane sealed the match, taking down Georgia Tech's Carolos Benito 6-0, 5-6 (6-8), 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Cochrane now has won 10 straight singles matches, which is tied for the second longest winning streak in the country.
The Tigers trailed 3-2 late in the match, but Dennis Lengsfeld defeated Eduardo Segura 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 on court three to set up Cochrane's win. Lengsfeld has now won seven out of his last ten matches.
"It was a good, tough win for us tonight," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "Our two seniors, Dan and Dennis, played really tough late in the match to get us the win. I liked what I saw with our team tonight battling back the way we did."
Auburn dropped the doubles point, but made up ground in singles with wins from No. 85 Dante Saleh and Joseph Van Dooren. Saleh extended his winning streak to 12 straight matches, posting a 6-5 (7-1), 6-3 win on at the No. 4 spot in the lineup. Van Dooren tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court six.
Lukas Ollert on court one in tough three-set match, dropping a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision to Georgia Tech's Nathan Rakitt to push the Yellow Jackets lead to 3-2.
In doubles play, Auburn dropped a pair of tight matches. No. 60 Ollert/Lengsfeld battled with the Georgia Tech's No. 15 Benito/Segura 6-3, snapping a nine-match losing streak.
Casey Kay and Rakitt provided the Yellow Jackets with the doubles, topping Auburn's Cochrane and Oliver Plaskett in tiebreaker, 6-5 (7-5), on court two. Auburn's pair of Saleh and Van Dooren were tied 5-5 with Georgia Tech's Cole Fiegel and Will Showers when played was abandoned.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday afternoon, taking on No. 23 Clemson in a top-25 showdown. First serve is set for 12 p.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
