MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 28 Auburn men's tennis team fell, 4-1, to Alabama in its final match at the Blue Gray Classic at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center on Sunday.
Auburn (10-4) won the doubles point to begin the match, but was swept in singles by Alabama (6-5) allowing the Crimson Tide to clinch the match.
Daniel Cochrane and Oliver Plaskett were the first off the court with a 6-2 win over Alabama's Nikko Madregallejo and Daniil Proskura. The 60th-ranked pair of Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert posted a 6-3 victory over Sean O'Donohue and Becker O'Shaughnessey on court two to seal the point to put Auburn up 1-0 early.
The Tigers were unable to pick up a singles win after clinching the doubles point for the second straight match. Ollert fell to 12th-ranked Proskura in No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-4; while Lengsfeld dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision on court two to Alabama's No. 72 O'Shaughnessey as the Tigers dropped the lead.
No. 85 Saleh won the first set, but was topped on court five by Andrew Goodwin of Alabama 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Petar Tomic fell in match where both sets were decided by tiebreakers, losing 6-5, 6-5 on court four to Alabama's Donohue.
No. 112 Cochrane was in a three-set battle when play was suspended. Cochrane rallied from dropping the first set 1-6, to take the second and was leading 2-1 in the deciding set when play was halted.
Van Dooren was also in a three-set match on court six with Alabama's Hayes Brewer. The sophomore won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second and was leading 3-2 in the third when play was called.
Auburn opens up SEC play next weekend on the road. The Tigers travel to Ole Miss to begin their conference slate on Friday in Oxford, Miss., before traveling to Mississippi State on Sunday, March 2 to wrap up their first weekend of league play.
