STARKVILLE, Miss. ­- The 31st-ranked Auburn men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision on Sunday, falling to No. 16 Mississippi State on the road in Starkville, Miss., at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

Auburn (11-5, 1-1 SEC) dropped the doubles point against the Bulldogs as the Tigers looked to knock off Mississippi State for the second time in an eight-day span. Last Saturday at the Blue Gray Classic, Auburn defeated Mississippi State on a neutral court in Montgomery, Ala.

The Bulldogs jumped out to early leads on courts one and three to take the doubles point. Auburn's Daniel Cochrane and Oliver Plaskett fell on court one to Mississippi State's (12-4, 2-0 SEC) Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp, 8-4. On court three, the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point as Rishab Agarwal and Zach White defeated the Tigers' Dante Saleh and Joseph Van Dooren, 8-4.

Auburn's pair of Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert were tied, 5-5, on court two with MSU's Florian Lakat and Tassilo Schmid when play was abandoned.

In singles, Auburn and Mississippi State split the first two matches. Auburn's Petar Tomic fell on court four 6-2, 6-4 to Angus, while No. 119 Cochrane picked up a straight-set win on court three with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The senior has won four straight for the Tigers playing at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.

The Bulldogs claimed the match over the Tigers with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 in the lineup. Van Dooren barely dropped the first set, falling in a close tiebreaker as MSU's Agarwal defeated the sophomore 7-6 (5), 6-0.

Lengsfeld also battled in the first set before losing in a tough tiebreaker as the senior was defeated by No. 63 Florian Lakat 7-6 (3), 6-2.

No. 118 Ollert was in the middle of a third-set battle with MSU's Stropp 6-4, 5-7, 1-2 before play was called. No. 120 Saleh was down a set and trailing 5-3 in the second when play was suspended after the match was clinched.

Auburn opens up its home SEC schedule on Friday with Arkansas on 2 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Tigers also face LSU next Sunday at 1 p.m. to round out the weekend.
