AUBURN, Ala. Â- The No. 36 Auburn men's tennis team topped LSU, 4-1, on Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Freshman Petar Tomic clinched the match for Auburn, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 on court four.
In singles play, four matches went to three sets with Auburn (12-5, 3-1 SEC) winning two on the afternoon. Senior No. 119 Dan Cochrane set up Tomic's win, taking down LSU's Boris Arias on court two 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, to pick up his 22nd win of the year in singles and stay undefeated in SEC play at 4-0.
"It was really tough. The doubles we were a little slow out of the gate, but we responded and then they (LSU) fought back. That's how the match was all day," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said following the win. "I thought LSU responded well in singles and it was a battle, but we came out and got through it."
LSU (7-7, 0-4 SEC) tied the match at 1-1 as Auburn's Oliver Plaskett was defeated by Harrison Kennedy on court six, 6-2, 6-3. It would take some time for another match to finish; the top five matches on the lineup card were battles with four going to three sets.
Senior Dennis Lengsfeld avoided a three-set match by topping LSU's Andrew Korniek 6-2, 7-6 (6) to put the Tigers back in the lead at 2-1. The senior is now 4-1 in SEC play and also 7-1 when playing at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
"We knew it was going to be a tight match, we knew LSU was good and in this league you've got to be ready to come out and compete," Shore said.
Junior No. 118 Lukas Ollert was leading in the third set on court one, 4-2 when play was suspended. Freshman Dante Saleh was also in a three-set battle on court five, facing Justin Butsch.
Auburn took the doubles point to begin the match behind wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 tandems. LSU claimed the first doubles match as Auburn's Saleh and Tomic fell to Andrew Korinek and Eric Perez. 8-4 on court three.
Lengsfeld and Ollert won on court two, moving to 17-4 on the year with an 8-5 victory against LSU's Butsch and Tam Trinh.
Auburn took the doubles point with the pair of Cochrane and Plaskett picking up their first win over a top-25 team, knocking off LSU's No. 20 Chris Simpson and Boris Arias, 8-6.
The Tigers travel to Alabama on Friday for their lone match of the week. Auburn takes on the Crimson Tide at 5 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
